Oncology psychologist

No one can give a definite answer to the question of how to cope with a cancer illness. It is not only the physical state of the body that deteriorates during the course of the illness: it is not uncommon for psychological problems to begin to emerge as well. It is much „easier” to suffer from depression, anxiety (and even panic attacks) or strong mood swings once cancer has been diagnosed. Very often, family and loved ones also do not know how to help a person with cancer - how to support them effectively and wisely through their illness. In such a situation, it is definitely worth seeking outside help, especially as the patient's well-being and mental condition can be crucial in the recovery process. It would certainly be a good idea to seek the help of a psycho-oncologist. A psycho-oncologist is a person who combines comprehensive knowledge of both psychology and oncology. He or she knows exactly how to help a person with cancer by strengthening his or her psychological strength and supporting him or her in the next stages of coping with the disease. Psychological help after a cancer diagnosis can take many forms. Right after the diagnosis, the psychologist helps the person to get used to it and accept the new state of affairs. In turn, during the course of treatment, the specialist teaches the patient how to find and build up his or her psychological strength and how to cope with the emotional effects of the cancer illness. It is worth remembering that mental problems following the detection of cancer may be related not only to a strong emotional reaction to the situation. They may also have a purely physiological basis - they may be the result of changes in the organism caused by the illness, and may be a side effect of the radio or chemotherapy to which the patient is subjected.
